An inspiring mum of 3 and a busy GP. It’s about finding that balance.
Thanks Sarah for allowing us to share this.
Be proud
As a triathlete of 12 years my training and competing had been on and off over that time with some promising results at times but 3 kids, a pandemic and work related exams for myself and my husband often putting triathlon on the backburner. Things settled down a bit and I decided 2024 was going to be my year.
An early win at local triathlon brigg sprint (and a dose of hypothermia) was a nice boost at the start of the season. Then I went onto Dambuster triathlon which is a qualifier for next year and finished 4th in my age group. Good enough for qualification but 4th place always gives you that feeling of wanting to go one better. By this point I had exhausted the generic programme I was following having repeated it a couple of times and decided to ask Steve to help me really achieve that higher level I was looking for.
My goals were to finish in the top 10 at the Europeans, top 10 at the worlds and also tick off that elusive sub 40 10k run time.
Steve’s coaching immediately took a weight off my mind… I didn’t need to think about what to do and how to train anymore but had good quality varied sessions provided every week with the ability to let him know what was and wasn’t working and what I could fit in when. The training has been more challenging than I have done before and doing those longer harder sessions consistently I really noticed the difference in my fitness and performance levels. Knowing on race day that you have done all the right things in the lead up and not inadvertently done something silly really gave me great confidence. The work had been done and it was time to perform.
It really has been my best season to date.
Belvoir Castle triathlon July
European triathlon champs Vichy September AG 6th place
World triathlon champs Torremolinos AG 7th place and mixed team relay
I wanted to flop on the sofa at the end of October but I still had that 10k itch that needed a scratch so off to Doncaster 10k and some targeted run training from Steve over November. Again I experienced that feeling of knowing I could do it this time and despite adverse weather conditions I clocked 39.08. A firm tick in the sub 40 box Best of all I have a history of making myself pretty ill on 10k all out races in the past but this time I felt fine. Doing the right training really pays off.
I’m looking forward to training with Steve over winter and seeing even more gains next year.
Thanks Steve.
